COURSE SITE: Llandough Hospital and University Hospital of Wales

This course takes place annually over a period of 4 weeks for histopathology trainees on the Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust training Scheeme

OBJECTIVE

  • To obtain diagnostic confidence in the handling of a wide variety of lymphoreticular pathology specimens
  • To develop a clear understanding of the REAL/WHO Classification
  • To understand, in particular the role of Immunohistochemistry in haematopathology
  • To understand the workings of the integrated haematopathology laboratory in haematopathological diagnosis i.e. role of flow cytometry, molecular biology and cytogenetics
  • To attend MDT Meetings AWLP (<st1:place><st1:placename>Velindre <st1:placetype>Hospital + UHW)
  • To develop an understanding of lymphoma treatment
  • To attend Course lectures (see below)
  • To review new and slide teaching AWLP Consultation cases
  • To obtain a basic understanding of bone marrow specimen interpretation
  • To gain basic information on:

    • Immunophenotyping (Flow cytometry)    Mr S. Couzens (SC)

AIMS

At the end of the course the participants should be able to recognise:

REACTIVE (non-specific):      

  • Reactive follicular hyperplasia vs Lymphoma
  • Reactive paracortical changes vs Lymphoma
  • Reactive sinusoidal proliferations vs Malignancy
  • Granulomatous lymphadenitis (necrotising and non – necrotic)

REACTIVE (specific):

  • Castlemans disease
  • Progressive Transformation germinal centres
  • Toxoplasmosis
  • EBV
  • Kikuchi lymphadenitis
  • Dermatopathic lymphadenopathy
  • Drug effects
  • Rheumatoid arthritis lymphadenopathy
  • SLE
  • Rosai – Dorfman
  • Plasmacytosis vs myeloma

POST TRANSPLANT LYMPHOPROLIFERATIVE CONDITIONS

NEOPLASTIC:          

  • Non – Blastic NHL:       diagnosis & handling problems

  • Blastic NHL:                 diagnosis & handling problems

  • Hodgkin lymphoma:    diagnosis & handling problems

  • Myeloid neoplasia:        diagnosis & handling problems
